RIO: Mikel to captain Nigeria at the Olympics


John Mikel Obi To Captain Nigeria At Rio 2016 Olympics – John Mikel Obi is reportedly set to lead Nigeria’s Dream Team IV out at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.


Football squads for the Olympics are allowed to have 3 players above the age of 23, and coach Samson Siasia has reportedly chosen Mikel and Chippa United goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi as his overage players for the tournament.

“Samson Siasia has submitted his 18-man list for this year’s Olympic football tournament in Rio, Brazil and I can authoritatively disclosed to you that the coach opted for only two over-age players and they are Mikel Obi and goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi”, a report stated.

Mikel would be hoping to lead Nigeria to a second Olympic gold medal, following the country’s triumph at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Other overage players who were hoping to make the squad but didn’t include Odion Ighalo, Ahmed Musa, Kenneth Omeruo and Godfrey Oboabona.

Nigeria will face Colombia, Japan and Sweden in Group B, with their opening match against Japan on the 4th of August.
